Hi Everyone
Yesterday, August 14th, I led a field trip to Amherst Island. This was definitely the day to be shorebird watching on the island. Shorebird's were present in good numbers and varieties. A total of 19 species were observed including 1 Whimbrel, 2 juv. Ruddy Turnstone, 4 juv. Baird's Sandpiper, 1 ad. Stilt Sandpiper, 4 juv. Short-billed Dowithcher, and 1 juv. Wilson's Phalaope. There was a nice mixuture of adult and juv. plumaged Least and Semi's Sanpipers. Most of the shorebirds were along the gravel bar at the eastend (KFN) property. At the ponds, 1 Green Heron, 1 Black-crowned Night-Heron and 1 American Bittern were observed. There were 1000's of swallows feeding all over the Island with Barn, Tree and Bank being the most common and smaller numbers of Cliff, Rough-winged and Purple Martin. In the "Owl Woods" there were a number of warblers including Nashville, Yellow-rumped, Ovenbird, Yellow and Black-throated Green. At least 5 Long-eared Owls were roosting in the woods.
