Today in and around Keswick, Keith and Chris Dunn had a SNOWY OWL along the
short stretch of Yonge St. that runs south of Ravenshoe Road. This is the
first Snowy of the winter for York region as far as I know. They also observed
WHITE-WINGED, BLACK and SURF SCOTER between Cook's Bay and Holmes Point. They
added a RED-NECKED GREBE at the latter location as well as several Am. Wigeon,
Canvasbacks, lots of Cm. Loons, several Greater Blk.-Backed Gulls and several
Bonaparte's Gulls.

On Saturday Mike Van den Tillaart flushed a LONG-EARED OWL along the Holland
River trail west of Main Street in north Newmarket and, on Sunday, observed a
NORTHERN SHRIKE on the west side of Bathurst just north of Green Lane.

  Ron Fleming, Newmarket

Newmarket and Keswick are just north of Toronto and south of Lake Simcoe.
Ravenshoe Road runs east-west along the southern perimeter of the town of
Keswick.
Yonge Street runs a short distance south of Ravenshoe at its western end near
the main channel of the Holland River. This is an unpaved, narrow section of
road which can make for some creative turning if one wishes to avoid getting
stuck in mud. Weather conditions should be factored into one's driving.

The Holland River Trail follows the eastern branch of that river on the
northern outskirts of Newmarket. It is most easily accessed by taking Main St.
north from town, crossing Green Lane, then parking at the bottom of the hill by
the railway tracks (turn right immediately after the crossing and park). Walk
to the river, cross the road, and go into the woods at the gate just south of
the bridge. The trail follows the river westward. The town of Holland Landing
sits on the north side of the river.

Hi Everyone
Yesterday, Nov.15th, I birded along the Ottawa River from Britannia to
Constance Bay. Quite a change on the river regarding loons. Didn't see any
Red-throated but there were still 60+ Common Loons, 9 Red-necked Grebe and 6
Horned Grebe at various locations. At Constance Bay I observed a Cackling
Goose in a flock of 1500+ Canada's off #774 Bayview Drive.
There were still a few small scattered flocks of all 3 scoters and
Long-tailed Duck between Dick Bell Park and Shirley's Bay. Also, at Dick
Bell Park, 3 male Canvasback were present in the mixed flock of Lesser and
Greater Scaup. At the corner of Rifle Road and Carling Ave. a Northern
Shrike was perched in a tree. Had a flock of 14 White-winged Crossbills
along Kerwin Road near # 881.
                                                        good birding
