Highlights of reports received from the past two weeks, September 11
to September 25, include BLACK VULTURE, TRICOLORED HERON, WHIMBREL,
BUFF-BR. SANDPIPER, NORTHERN BOBWHITE and D.-CREST. CORMORANTS.
September 13, in the Town of Amherst, a BLACK VULTURE passed high
over a yard in Williamsville.
Back on September 10, a late report of a TRICOLORED HERON at the
north blind at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo.
At the Batavia Waste Water Plant, two WHIMBRELS for several days,
including September 22. This is the third record of WHIMBREL at the
plant, and one of less than 10 records of WHIMBREL away from the Lake
Erie shore in the BOS archives. Also at the plant, HORNED GREBE and
AMERICAN BITTERN.
In Ontario, September 15, BUFF-BR. SANDPIPER at the Hutchinson Road
turf farms near Poth Road in Dunnville, along with 4 unexpected RUDDY
TURNSTONES in the fields, plus BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and PECTORAL SANDPIPER. On
Harborview Road in Wainfleet, 3 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. And, September 18
at Rock Point Park in Dunnville, a WHIMBREL.
Recent shorebirds on the Lake Erie beach at Saint Columbans in the
Town of Sheridan included BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER
and WHITE-R. SANDPIPER. At the Bird Island Pier in the Buffalo, 12
SANDERLINGS with 8 BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERONS.
In West Seneca, a rarely reported NORTHERN BOBWHITE at a feeder for
several weeks. NORTHERN BOBWHITE in the region is likely an escape or
released bird.
September 21, an exceptional gathering of 6000 D.-CREST. CORMORANTS
at the mouth of the Niagara River off Fort Niagara State Park.
September 18, RUBY-T. HUMMINGBIRD in a Williamsville yard, and at
least 13 warbler species in the same yard during the past two weeks,
with YELLOW-B. FLYCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, PHILADELPHIA VIREO,
RED-EYED VIREO, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH and SWAINSON'S THRUSH.
The night of September 15, migrants heard over the Town of Tonawanda
included VEERY, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH and WOOD THRUSH.
COMMON NIGHTHAWK reports - 15 over Williamsville on the 13th, 10
over the Buffalo Zoo on the 22nd, and 3 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS over
Eggertsville in Amherst on September 25.
Also the 25th, OSPREY at Delaware Park Lake in Buffalo.
Other reports - adult BALD EAGLE over Lakeview in Hamburg.
RED-HEADED WDPKR. over Birdsong Park on Jewett Holmwood Road in
Orchard Park, plus 10 warbler species and 2 PURPLE FINCHES in the
park. YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKERS and AMERICAN PIPITS at several locations.
And, a singing SCARLET TANAGER in the Genesee County Town of Bethany.
