With regard to online credit card payments, I disagree, for two reasons.
The first is that is makes them a one-stop shop. I don't want to buy
bulk service from a one-stop shop, I want to buy it from an entity that
specializes. If OpenSRS starts taking credit card orders over the web,
it further blurs the line between registrar and [IR]SP and dilutes the
industry. If I can reduce the likelihood that my larger customers will
just become OpenSRS RSPs themselves, I keep that business.
The second reason is the bank. OpenSRS currently requires *signatures*
for credit card transactions. This presumably gives their bank
confidence that despite the fact that OpenSRS' customers are from all
around the globe and do Internet things (which is about as technical as
most banks get in their understanding of this business), there is at
least some physical document that OpenSRS can pull out in case of a VISA
chargeback and say "But look, he signed this!"
So the fact that there's a signature means that OpenSRS has a far
smaller chance of being victim of a chargeback. Their current policies
are pretty clear -- a "signed" credit card gets processed immediately,
a wire transfer gets processed when they receive and verify it, and a
cheque gets processed when it clears. In all cases, OpenSRS is covering
its ass against fraud, which reduces their overhead costs.
That said, I certainly wouldn't mind if the good folks at OpenSRS built
an on-line credit card payment system and jacked up the prices with a
10% "tax" to cover development and insurance costs. But I certainly
wouldn't want the development of such a system to impact on the price I
currently pay for registrations.
So is this a business opportunity? Should I set up a company that
accepts credit card and PayPal payments online and guarantees a 24 hour
turnaround for that 90% of each payment will be paid to OpenSRS on
behalf of the account holder?
