January Sheep Management WisLine Program The January 2nd program will address the topic of "Wool Markets and the USDA Wool Loan Deficiency Payments" from 7:30-8:50 p.m. at county WisLine sites throughout Wisconsin. The resource person will be Bob Padula, Montevideo, Minnesota. Bob is a sheep producer and a wool consultant to the American Sheep Industry Association. He will provide producers with an update of national and regional wool markets and future predictions on wool prices. Of perhaps more immediate interest will be his discussion of the new USDA loan program and loan deficiency payments on wool. This new program has several options, and many aspects of the program are somewhat confusing. However, most producers can receive a cash payment from the Federal government on wool they produce. The deadline for signing up for the program for wool harvested and marketed in 2002 is January 31, 2003 at county FSA offices. In future years, producers must sign up for the program prior to selling their wool, however, wools marketed before October 11, 2002 may be eligible for payments this year. Additional programs of the 2002-2003 Sheep Management Series will be on the first Thursday evenings of the months of February and March (Feb. 6 and Mar. 6) from 7:30 to 8:50 p.m. A schedule for the entire series complete with topics and speakers is available through your local County Extension Office and at the Website given above. The Sheep Management WisLine programs are free, but participants must call their local County Extension Office prior to each session to register for that particular session.
