How sad! I don't have pastures full of sheep, I have pet lambs on a few acres. I've
got 2 Great Pyrenees & an Akbash that were raised as house
dogs (wonderful-all of them, all neutered males). But I've come to depend pretty
heavily on those 3 to keep stray dogs Far AWAY from our fenceline.
We're out in the country and stray dogs is the biggest problem around here. I just got
an Anatolian Shepherd mix puppy that I had every intention of
raising in with my lambs. Because of my situation it's kind of hard to have 1 outdoor
dog and all the rest in and out though so while he's wonderful
with the lambs, he's being raised as a indoor dog.
When I leave and at night I leave one of my Pyrs or my Akbash out front with the
lambs. It just makes me feel better knowing they're with the lambs.
I don't trust most my other dogs with the lambs (or goats) but these I do.
My suggestion would definitely be a good livestock guardian dog. I got my Anatolian
(mixed with another LGD breed) because he's colored exactly
like my Barbado lambs. It's not easy to find an already trained livestock guardian
dog, they're expensive and worth their weight in gold. But it might
not be too difficult to find a 4-6 month old that's been raised around livestock that
you can put in with your sheep to bond with them.
It's definitely something to research on your own as there's alot that goes into it.
