I am looking for some help with our ewe. She lambed two days ago in the evening. We
put Mama and baby ( a strong healthy guy) in the lambing jug then in the morning she
had what seemed afterbirth hanging out still. We gave some gentle tugs but it did not
come. We called the vet and they said to wait and it should come by itself. The next
day it was still there, the vet gave us antibiotics and we began to think she might
have a lamb still in there. Next day, she was off her feed and would not let her lamb
nurse anymore. She seemed very sick and listless. It seems there is a lamb still in
her at least we can feel a mass in her belly. We went in to feel around but the
cervix was so tight and closed we could not get a hand in to feel for a lamb. We were
able to gently work the cervix to get all 5 fingers in but after over an hour were not
able to get a fist through. She seemed to be in so much pain we stopped trying.
So is there anything else we can do or does she need to be put down? Is there
anything else that could cause her to act so sick? We have never had anything like
this before. The vet is not very helpful, their first interest is cattle in this part
of the country.
Thanks
Chris
