Hi Bobbie,

The BBSAI cannot and is not suggesting that the Barbado breed name be changed in general. To do so would be pretentious and make thousands of Barbado breeders upset. The BBSAI is asking its members to decide on a name to call those Barbado sheep that are registered with the BBSAI and meet a specific breed standard. Members raising Barbado sheep have maintained a much stricter standard than the one described in OSU's Web site, adhering to the BBSAI breed standards defined for the Barbados Blackbelly with the addition of horns. The sheep that can be registered with the BBSAI are a subset of the Barbado breed. Members raise Barbado that bear the distinctive color pattern of Barbados Blackbelly, whereas Barbado in general do not necessarily have black bellies or facial barbs. Many breeders registering their sheep wish to distinguish their Barbado sheep from the popular description and also differentiate their breed from the Barbados Blackbelly. They have requested that a new breed be defined as a way to accomplish this. We are asking BBSAI members to decide if they want their sheep to continue to be known as Barbado or if they want their sheep to be called something different. The vote currently before the membership is to select one of the following options:

Barbado (no change)
American Barbado
American Blackbelly

Votes will be counted at the annual meeting September 11/12.

Hopefully, after a name has been chosen, all sheep that match the breed description can be identified using the new name, thus eliminating the confusion not only in BBSAI member flocks but in non-member flocks as well.

Carol

Does anyone know if the BBSAI is planning a vote on a name change to
differentiate between horned and polled stock?
