I was also going by the example of FreeType, libxml2, Linux-PAM, OpenSSL, Tcl, etc... which all have tar commands to unpack optional tar files. The reason for me doing this are, for me it is easier to understand, it's consistent with how other packages are written, and finally and most importantly , it makes it easier to work with auto build scripts. I hope you can reconsider to what I have done as an improvement.
