Well, I cannot explain this then.

Someone put this change in between 5.0 and 5.1. This was before my
time. It was put in there for a reason. Now, I'm telling you that
without running the autotools on my system before building (and of
course applying the patch) the build fails. Configure fails
immediately.

I would leave it in there as this makes two folks who are having
trouble without autotools (at least).
