Hello,
the current BLFS includes XFce-4.2.2 and GTK+-2.8.9. These versions
are incompatible, resulting in runtime problems (like text leaking out
of taskbar buttons). Please either upgrade to XFCE-4.2.3.2 (which
fixes many GTK-2.8 compatibility bugs) or, if I am the only XFCE user
here, drop the package.
You're definitely not the only XFCE user. I'm VERY strongly in favour of
keeping XFCE in the book. XFCE in BLFS is a strange thing though. XFCE
consists of too many separate packages that depend on each other.
Although simplifying things by putting together, for example, most
libraries in a single source package has bees discussed in both the xfce
mailing list and irc channel, nothing seems to have come of it yet. So,
building xfce manually (and the blfs way) is right now, imho, a pain in
the ass. I have been using the very beautiful graphical installer to
build xfce on all my lfs/blfs systems for ages (yes, it does build from
sources, it allows optimization and it is even possible to use it with a
package user).
This is probably also why I never experiences that issue you found. I
never cared for the Version suggested in blfs, but always just took the
newest awailable installer.
Although I see the using that installer is not according to lfs
principles, and, thus, cannot be the main method used in blfs book, I
wonder If it might be possible to provide a short notice pointing to
those installers, so that lazy users might be spared the annoyance of
manually building more than a dozend tiny packages that all depend on
each other in some way.
I can see lots of noise coming now... I considered quite some time
before pressing the send button. Now, shoot me.
