madwifi is only needed by you. That and many of the drivers you listed in the kernel config are user-specific. I don't see how the book is going to do this. Yes, and when a person can't possibly test very many of the thousands of different cards, and when 2 people can have the same model number of cards but with totally different chipsets and methods of setting them up things get exacerbating quickly.
