Well, I had started to send this to support, but then tried to dig in a
little deeper. I only use msn and yahoo, but for both as soon as I send
a message, gaim exits. I started gaim from the console with the -d
option, and here is the last part of the output:

util: Writing file prefs.xml to directory /home/dj/.gaim
conversation: typed...
Creating link /home/dj/.kde/socket-name1.
can't create mcop directory
dns[2765]: Oops, father has gone, wait for me, wait...!
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# dns[2763]: Oops, father has gone, wait for me, wait...!

Seems a bit interesting being that I don't have 'kde' installed, but QT
and Arts. Someone made a bad assumption somewhere. Doesn't look like
an option to disable qt/kde in configure. Anyway, _a_ working solution
is to create the directory before running gaim...now why this is
required I'm not certain.

'mkdir -p $HOME/.kde/socket-$(hostname)' should do the trick for the
book or wiki.

Getting to the bottom of the problem, libao was linked against arts.
This _might_ explain a little, however, without kdelibs or kdebase, I
wouldn't expect to see any software looking for ~/.kde. This is an
error someplace! 'Should it be using ~/.qt or ~/.arts?' and 'How _was_
the directory supposed to be created?' are the remaining questions that
need to go strait to gaim...I think (libao?).

I just wanted my little analysis to be verified and see if anyone else
has seen this before I go bugging upstream maintainers. I think I'll
remove the directory and install kdelibs next (and step my way up if
needs be). I'll need it and base anyway for k3b. Looking at it now, I
have a pretty good idea that this will turn out to be an arts error.
