And, of course, having slept on the idea, I realised that the ENTITY entries for the version info do match, as you point out, the BLFS XML source file names. Oddly enough, as someone who goes through the files replacing a swathe of xref entries to packages that i don't bother with, I'm surprised I missed that one too. It does sound though, even though it is a larger patch than I had originall envisaged, as though it is doable and that there is nothing, in the background, that would preclude such a change. That "db "in the dbhtml tag has always had me wondering. I will endeavour to create such a patch and submit it.
