Consider a cron job that runs as your normal user every so many
minutes.

Let's see, no requirement for kde, gnome, emacs, or x. That pretty much
just leaves pine and mutt. BTW, mutt is only as crude as your desire to
actually configure it. If you are so gung-ho as to not have to do much
to achieve this, then I would suggest stopping with just postfix and
fetchmail.  No procmail, no mua. Just a .forward file that points to
gmail. Then let gmail be your filter and mua all in one.
