Stephen, I have found that printers which do not speak PostScript do not work well with CUPS. I struggled with CUPS a couple of years ago and it was nothing but trouble. I switched to lprng+hpijs and now I can print from PostScript apps on the Linux box and PCL apps on my DOS/Windows workstation without ever having to think about which driver to route through. People keep saying CUPS is easier to manage, but only in terms of a prettier GUI. This weekend it took me maybe 30 minutes on my new LFS system to find, download, install, and configure the newest hpijs and lprng, and I'm not going to have to mess with them again until the next time I upgrade hardware and start my next LFS project. Hope that helps... I can send you my printcap if you like. Hmmm, maybe I should write up what I learned in a mini-HOWTO for other folks who have PCL printers and/or applications which only generate PCL output. -- Peter B.
