Please try this as the last thing. I know you are using /usr now,
but there was really no need to as using /opt should have worked.

Try this command again:

echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH

If nothing is again returned, you did not set up the PKG_CONFIG_PATH
variable according to the book's instructions (including sourcing the
file that set the variable).
