Do you have 2 sound cards? When you run alsamixer, what card and chip 
does it say? Have you compiled support for those into the kernel? Have 
you unmuted all the channels (press m) in alsamixer? Does speaker-test 
give any sound? I don't use kde, oss or pulse audio so I can't help with 
those.
