What you describe is how we do it here, for various machines. (This
particular machine has 1.7.0 for keyboard, but iirc it's 1.8.x for at
least some others.) And all works just fine.

I guess you could try using e.g. the evdev driver: but - at least here -
that tends to only be used in a *udev environment; and iirc has dependency
on some *udev stuff - would need to check notes to be sure.

For what you outline above, it should work very well for you. For anything
not outlined above: depends on what you're wanting to be doing
