I don't have a projector, and the sound from my TVs is pretty poor.
On my lounge TV (cable) I use HDMI for the picture, but turn the
sound off and route the SCART output from my Virgin box (i.e. a
TiVo) through my hifi.

So yeah, HDMI is useful for some things, but for the moment my
computer room uses an old hifi amp (and usually, headphones - I'm
often listening late (i.e. early), or with it turned up to monitor
a recording from LP in audacity so that I can hear hte clicks).
