Hi Arianna, What a way for me to introduce myself to the list. LOL.
I have been lurking on the list for about a week and a half, as this is S. O. P. for me when ever I join a new list. Some of you may know me from the Jaws User's list, of which I am a proud member, and some of you I am just introducing myself to for the very first time. In any case, sorry for being so late with the introductions. My name is Victor, and I live in Toronto Canada with my wife and 5 year-old daughter, Aliyah. I have been blind for just over 5 years, since my daughter was born, and have been enjoying this wicked ride that is blind technology. I have a couple of questions for you, and a couple of suggestions that you may want to employ regardless of what the answers are to my questions. First, I didn't catch what version of Windows you are running, and how old your laptop is. I'm assuming you downloaded and installed all the updates for your computer, both from Microsoft and ASUS, so I'm also wondering my second question, which is have you installed any new software recently since this problem began? Judging by what you said about configuring your ASUS power management settings about a year ago, would this problem go away if you reverted back to your old settings? I only ask as this may have contributed to the power management problems you currently face. I can cite an example... Several years ago, I had a laptop that I configured the power management utilities on, and found to my detriment, that it was forcing my battery to work even harder than it should have, resulting in faster battery drain, and severely reducing the life of the battery. Have you confirmed that your battery is still functioning properly? I don't know how else to do this except taking it to Beyond Sight, or an ASUS authorized repair centre to test the battery's efficiency and to see if it holds a charge. Another thought I had was trying to find a benchmarking utility on the net that you could download and use, either for a small fee or something free that you could find. This would allow you to run a benchmark series on your laptop's different components, in other words, tests, to see if they are running the way they are supposed to run in comparison to normal conditions that the maker of the benchmark program has decided is the norm for that particular hardware configuration. As for suggestions, I have only two and they have to do with the software angle of it all. We can decide if this is a software issue, or a hardware issue by running the normal utilities, such as Norton or any other anti-virus program you may have on your system, anti-spyware program, and a registry cleaner after you've run the two I just mentioned. I always like to run the registry cleaner after everything has been run to find any inconsistencies that the former utilities have left behind in all the deletions. I would also add a hard drive cleaner to the two utilities I mentioned above, the anti-virus and spyware programs, as there may be things in your temp folders that may be affecting your other system files. This is rare, but better to be safe than sorry. In any case, I hope you can answer some of my questions, if not all of them, and possibly, my suggestions at the end will help you, short of any hardware issues you may be facing, resolve your problems. Finally, I'm glad I joined this list, as it looks to be a great companion to the Jaws User's list.
