Hi Margaret John R. here
that's a problem I used to have trouble with but I'll tell you now that
alt+n doesn't get rid of the bar the steps are below and there isn't many of
them.

when you hear the sound to say that something is being blocked from you then
you do the following.
press Alt+n
this focuses you on the part of the bar that has it on then
press your Applications key, or right click on it if you can see the screan.
the applications key is found the key next to the right control key and the
applications key is one left of the control key if you went right you would
find the left arrow key then coming left the right control key then left one
more and this is the applications key this key does the same thing as
clicking the right mouse button on an item and once you've done that the
menu will pop up and you arrow down to download this file and this isn't
nothing to be affrade of this just means download that same page again and
activate any automatic starting of downloads or make available download
buttons or links again I hope this helps if you need help with the active x
window tools options and I can walk you through them as well if you wish
please let me know

from John and guide dog Iris

Ricque,,,

I ended up spending more time on this last night and still didn't
have any luck.

I did find a diagnostic center that was supposed to evaluate the
system as to why the genuine advantage couldn't be validated which
seems to need to happen before the file can be downloaded. One item
failed and I think Active X controls may need to be activated for the
test to be completed. I think Microsoft offered to do this for me,
but I kept running into problems with the information bar. It said to
click on install when the information bar came up, and JAWS said click
to install, but I couldn't find a way of clicking on it. I thought
alt-n got rid of the information bar if the page didn't load properly,
but I couldn't get that to work either.

I thought I could try to activate X controls before I start from
scratch in hopes of avoiding the information stone wall and I found a
post from '06 from another list that I think tells how to do it, but I
don't know what the default is supposed to be. I thought having them
turned on is dangerous.

Open Internet Explorer then open the tools menu and from there, the
options dialog. Control tab to advanced. It will take about six
control
tabs to get to this property sheet. Start looking through the options
and
see how things dealing with Active X controls are set. If you want to
do
this the easy way, set everything to the defaults in this dialog
unless
there are specific settings you don't want set to the defaults.

I had called my tech yesterday afternoon when I panicked when I
got the error message and he hasn't gotten back to me. I'd like to be
able to fix this by myself if possible, but I don't want to get in
more trouble and wonder if I should throw in the towel and give him
another call?

    Thanks,

Margaret

Hi Margaret,
Somewhere during that process, it should mention the windows
validation tool.
I can understand your frustration, so take a break.
You can go back to it later, when you are fresh, you'll get it.

Hi Ricque,

I seem to be in a loop trying to download the file. It seems MS
has to certify that my copy of XP and/or Office is genuine before it
will let me download it. It then said something about the genuine
advantage version having expired and I haven't been able to find out
how to get an unexpired one yet. I may have messed up since at least
the first I was asked if I wanted to run "Publisher" I said no since I
didn't understand that it was needed to run the validation process.
The expired thing may mean that I've exceeded my allotted attempts.
I'm hoping I can try again later.

I could swear that I've downloaded the genuine advantage thing
every time it has come up with updates. The machine is 2 years old
and the copy XP
is legal as far as I know. My tech built the machine and I don't know
if it was already on there or if he installed it. Anyway, I need a
break.

Hi Margaret,
Go ahead and download the file from Microsoft.
Run the file, it will install where it belongs.
No, you do not want the service pack 1 package.
The search companion is basically the Windows search utility.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Error Loading IE 6-XP Home

Hi All,

I got the following error message every time I loaded IE 6 today:

Error
A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You
may need to run setup.

and there was an okay button to press.

I did a Google search and found a Microsoft article that seems to
give a resolution to the problem, but I wanted to make sure I didn't
get myself into a mess and have a couple of questions.

SYMPTOMS
After you connect to a Web site, you may receive the following error
message:
A file that is required to run search companion cannot be found. You
may need to run setup.
After you receive this error message, you cannot use Search Companion
to search for files or folders, or to search the Internet. The options
to search for
files or folders, or to search the Internet, are unavailable.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a file required to run Search Companion is
missing or damaged. Note that this problem affects only the
English-language version
of Windows XP.

NOTE: Search Companion files may be damaged if you have Search
Companion open when you connect to certain Internet Service Providers.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Install Windows XP SP1

Method 2: Download and Install the Hotfix
The following file is available for download from the Microsoft
Download Center:

Download
Download the Q319949 package now

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319949

If I go ahead and download and try to install the Hotfix, will XP
automatically put it in the right place for me since I have no idea of
where it belongs? I have SP 2, so I don't think I want to install SP
1.

Also, where is the Search Companion? I downloaded and installed
the Microsoft updates yesterday and wonder if one of them might have
corrupted this Search Companion.

The computer is XP Home with IE 6 and I'm running JAWS 7.0.

Any help in straightening this out would be greatly appreciated.

Margaret
