If you use a secondary sound card to run JAWS through, you can independently control the main sound card, and the secondary sound card.

The volume control depends on which type of voice synthesizer you are using. For example, with Eloquence, there isn't really a separate volume control. You can adjust the level but it is effecting the computer, not Jaws independently. In some other synthesizers like DecTalk Express, the volume can be controlled separately. That has always been a problem with Eloquence. I sometimes get a conflict where I'm trying to hear what Jaws is saying but another sound source is too loud.
