Dear Mark

If you have a duplex scanner then having to do what you are doing is
ridiculous and we must be able to find a way for you to avoid this hassle!

I am afraid I do not currently use the same scanner as you. I currently use
the Canon DR 2580.
What scanning software are you using?

If you are using Kurzweil you should find the option to use duplex scanning
under the scanning options under the settings menu. I do not personally
rate the OCR on Kurzweil but if you are OK with this it might be your
simplest option. It is possible that there is a switch on the scanner? HP
need to be more helpful.

If there is not a switch on the scanner there must be an option to set
duplex scanning in the scanning software which came with your HP Scanner.
The following should work if
you have Microsoft Office and
2 your scanner driver is accessible .

Go to Programs , Office Tools, Microsoft Document Scanning.
Open the application and tab down to make sure that original is double
sided is definitely not checked. This is important as we want the scanner
driver to sort out the duplex scanning and we do not want to do this
manually..
Keep on tabbing down until you hear the scanner button.
Open this up and make sure that your scanner is selected and then tab down
and make sure that show scanner dialogue before scanning is checked . This
is not checked by default.
Press ok and return to the main Document Scanning window.
Have some pages ready to scan in your scanner sheet feeder.
Press the scan button in Microsoft document Scanning.
There may be a pause here whilst the scanner driver loads. Whether the
scanner driver window comes to the front or not is slightly unpredictable
so if after a minute you do not hear anything press alt tab to cycle
through your open windows to find your scanner driver. It should be there
somewhere.
Now this is the bit I cannot absolutely advise you on as I do not have your
scanner. However if you have a duplex scanner there absolutely must be an
option to set this in your scanner driver. At the moment it will be set to
simplex and you have to change this to duplex. This should be a once only
change so if you cannot make this change yourself you might need sighted
help for this bit.
Once you have made this change move to the Ok or scan button of your scanner
driver and control should be passed back to Microsoft document Scanning .
Once your scan is completed Microsoft Document Imaging will load with an
image of your scanned pages.
You now simply go to the Tools menu and select the send Text to Word
option.
Press ok to confirm you want all pages to be sent and your pages should be
opened automatically in Word.

Word will open this as a web page htm format and will try to preserve all
the font formatting. Personally I find that reading with Jaws for example
works best with simpler font layouts. I normally press control A to select
all my scan and set everything to Arial 12. Then rather than saving in htm I
normally save as rich text format.

You should not think the Office OCR is a poor relation by the way. It is my
OCR of choice as I find it easily outperforms programs like Kurzweil. The
interface is less smooth than Kurzweil though.

Give this a try and see if it works.

Let us know if there is a problem as I say it is unacceptable four you to
be struggling with this problem when you already have a duplex scanner.

Hi David Griffith,
I wish I could have access to a fine machine like you made reference
too. The one with the camera... Right now I am tearing the pages out of the
book and scanning them. The scanner I have actually is supposed to be a
duplex scanner. It is the HP 5590. How ever I have yet to figure out how to
make it do duplex scanning. even calling HP directly didn't help. The auto
sheet feeder does well in single sided mode however. Any ideas on how to
get a HP 5590 duplex scanning? I am running vista home addition.
     Thank you.

God bless,
Mark

Use the Microsoft document Scanning application that comes with the MS
Office suite. One of the options that will be provided in this application
is a check box to indicate that the document that you are scanning is double
sided. The application will prompt you to scan the reverse pages and then
merge them. By the way this application has an excellent OCR.

However this is a very time consuming way of doing this. It depends on how
much you have to read but you may want to consider the purchase of a duplex
scanner. Basically I had to read loads of books for my recent Masters
degree. In the end the only feasible way of independently reading the number
of books I needed to was to purchase the key books, tear the pages out and
feed them through my duplex scanner and start reading.

In this way I could scan a 300-400 page book in less than half and hour. For
my PhD though I have successfully argued to the DSA in the UK that they
should fund the purchase of an Eye Pal scanner. This is a portable and
extremely small camera that sits on a tripod over an open book. Crucially
this device also includes a motion detector which will recognise when you
have turned the page of a book. Apparently in this book mode of scanning you
can make 20 2 page scans a minute. That is 40 pages. It is very expensive
at the moment and I think it is only feasible to get through Access to Work
or Disabled Student's Allowance but this does seem to be the future of
scanning for people with visual impairment.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] synchronizing documents

Hi
I need to find a way to synchronize pages between two documents. This
is my trouble I bout a vista compatible scanner that has the auto sheet
feeder but it is only scanning one side of the document at a time. Since I
am scanning text books for my college classes, the resulting document has
pages one, three, five and so on. If I run the document through with the
other side of the pages up I get pages two, four, six and so on. I need a
quick easy to merge these documents in to a single document with the pages
in the correct place. I do have MS Word 2007 but I have no idea if there is
a way to use it for this task. Any ideas on how to fix this trouble with
merging my documents would be appreciated.

God bless,
Mark
