Hi,
You can also try installing something like Startup Control Panel and using
it to disable some of the things which are started automatically.
Just for giggles, start Task Manager with control plus shift plus escape and
refresh that screen with F5. Now read the status line and see how many
processes are running.
I run a fairly lean XP system with about 43 processes running normally.
If you have a lot more than that running you can google for info on any of
the processes on that list and see if you really need them.
