Now I remember why I stick with vhs. *smile*  I'd say, since this is
just for your own use, if you could at least get the dvd started,
record the audio, either onto a regular audio cassette or as an mp3 in
your machine.  That way, you can watch/listen to the film whenever you
want without the distraction and you can rewind and fastforward with
ease.  That or just try Youtube or Crackle.com..  They have alot of
really great films and television shows.  But if you simply can't be
bothered to do that, try an older version of VLC or even Windows Media
player or Media Player Classic.  They might be able to do the job
better.
