I heard about them from tech podcasts. I did not go looking for them, they
were waiting to be downloaded and installed from the System Tray Tuesday
night. I like to set the update setting so that I am aware of updates.
This does require the user to be viligent! For most people, including my
adault kids, I recommend automatic updates.
Open Windows Update and check for Updates. If you use automatic updates,
you can check update history to see if the IE8 and Windows 7 security
updates were installed this week.

I imagine the Windows Update servers are just extremely
busy! Microsoft
released it's largest numberr of security patches to date on
Tuesday! I
think I had about 14 different security downloads waiting.
Make sure that
you have downloaded and installed all Windows Updates this
week! Now that
these vulnerabilities are publicised, the virus writers will
attack all
computers whose users are not diligent with these updates or
have it done
automatically.
I wonder if the timing of these fixes had anything to do
with being so close
to the Black Hat Security convention recently? There was
even a major
security hole disclosed regarding ATM machines.
