Mike, I would go ahead and run the chkdsk utility to ensure all is ok prior to defrag. You can do this while you are using your computer since it is not the drive with your operating system on it. What I do with my external and/or slave drives is the following:
1. bring up the run dialogue box 2. type the following line: chkdsk drive letter: /f I use the f switch to automatically correct any errors. This may take some time due to the size of the drive.
