helpful free family tree websites. these are screen reader friendly:
the u. s. genweb.
http://www.usgenweb.org/
if you go to that site, you'll find a list of states. enter on the state
you
want and you'll get the counties lists. some counties have more
information
than others.
You can also check out rootsweb. it's free and you can search for your
relatives names, narrowing it to places as well through the advanced
search.
http://www.rootsweb.com
they have hundreds of mailing lists for surnames and places. if you know
where your relative lived, you can find a mailing list for that place and
search for the name.
They also have lots of user contributed family trees. if you're lucky, you
may find a distant cousin. that's called World Connect.
then, you can check out the LDS genealogy site:
http://www.familysearch.org
if you type into the search box the name, first and last, then the place,
and narrow it to time, i. e. 1900 to 1930,, you will get lots of hits.
then, you can narrow that by birthplace, europe or us, death place,
the same, birth year, 1700s, 1800s, 1900s etc. you may find more than you
imagined. I've had very good luck with the family search site lately.
It's
a bit tricky to get used to but it's definitely doable.
