Ok, turns out that for whatever reason, windows8 and the built in sound of
the laptop weren't cooperating - now plugged in my external USB sound
card/adapter, and can now activate both narrator, and NVDA, although the
jaws installation seems to not want to work right at the moment - might try
reinstalling it, but, yes, NVDA works, and narrator seems way more
informative as such already...<smile>

I will/want to, but, thus far, can't get windows8 to do any more than,
apparently, display something like that settings wizard dialogue.
As in, can't currently even get it to start narrator, initiate the run
dialogue, etc. etc...<smile>

Ran through installation of windows8 preview yesterday on my one spare
machine, installing it over an old installation of windows XP, but issue

now that while it seems to have pretty much completed installation, and

able to get it to make sounds, start narrator, invoke run dialogue box
etc.,
so not sure if it's still busy with part of install process, whether
