You can use the arrow keys to navigate a table, but that will move you character by character when you use the right and left arrows, and line by line with the up and down arrows. This is fine, but can require a lot of key presses. Another option is using Control+Alt+arrows. When using the key combination with the up and down arrows you will move up and down from row to row within the same column and JAWS will read the entire contents of the cell. When using the key combination with the right and left arrows, you will move right and left across a row. Again, JAWS will read the content of the cell as you move into that cell.
You can also use Tab and Shift+Tab to move through a table. When using the TAB key you will move from left to right across a row. When you get to the end of the row, another press of the TAB key will move you to the first cell of the next row. Shift+Tab will do the reverse, moving you from right to left and from bottom to top. When using Tab to move through the table, and you press it when you are in the last cell in the last row, a new row will be added. If you did not want to do this, use Control+z to Undo this action. That would be Row 1, Column 1. The first row is likely a number of headers. You should be able to use the arrow keys to travel down the column or across the row; stopping in each element. Also, using the <TAB> key will move you to each succeeding element. For example, if there are 6 columns and 8 rows, continually using the <TAB> from Row 1, Column 1 should take you to Column 2, Column 3, Column 4, Column 5 and Column 6; using the <TAB> in Row 1, Column 6 should take you to Row 2, Column 1, etc. Using <SHIFT><TAB> will cause to navigate up the table. Once you find yourself in the middle of the table, using the right and left arrow keys will move you along the row; using the up and down arrows keys will move you up and down the column. ---------------- Frank James - NO, Not That One! ;-) E-Mail: [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: mark Sent: Tuesday, October 02, 2012 11:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Blind-Computing] Reading Tables in MS Word with Jaws Hi I recently received an important MS word document that has a table with data I need to enter. How do I go about reading the various boxes in the table? Is there an easy way to skip from one box to the next. How do I enter data? I am using JAWS 14 beta, and MS office 2010 on a windows 7 computer. Thank you in advance for your help. God bless, Mark God Loves you!
