Hi Richard,
I doubt your game classes would target Linux as the industry standard is 
the Windows platform with MS DirectX 8 or higher.
However, Linux game design SDK's for games are getting quite advanced as 
well. The Open GL graphics libraries are rapidly becoming widely used by 
commercial game studios for Windows and Linux PC games as it does render 
good graphics. The Open AL system is a very good set of audio libraries, 
and is also used by Windows PC and Linux PC game developers.
However, the week point is finding something as good as DirectX 
DirectInput. SDL does fine for keybord handling, but it's joystick input 
sucks.
