Bill:
The drain opener I had specifically said not to pour onto surfaces of sinks 
etc. Because of staining.  That's why I was concerned about removing the 
stopper.

.and instead of the lift rod being inserted through a hole in the bottom of
.the stopper the stopper is permitted to rest on top of the lift rod.  In
.this type of installation it quite easy to merely lift the stopper out of
.the drain.  But when the lift rod is correctly inserted through a hole in
.the bottom of the stopper the rod prevents removal of the stopper.

.2)  Why the concern about pouring the drain cleaner over the stopper? I
.doubt that the drain cleaner will damage the stopper, if it did it would
.likely damage other components of the drain as well.
