bob's discription is correct, of course, but in the U.S. releasing freon into the atmosphere is highly illegal. Of course in the amounts here it is not important as a "greenhouse gas" but it's still a big no-no.
It could also be the thermostat checking the temperatures inside the chill compartment and the freezer should tell you if it's getting cold enough. Should be maybe 36 in the cold box and nearly or below 0 Fahrenheit in the freezer. Tom
