This is true. I build golf clubs as a hobby and you can melt epoxy with a heat
gun.

  Caution:

Many of the parts will be plastic, very sensitive to heat and there may be
heat sensitive heater and sensor wire insulation. Those heat guns can generate
hundreds of degrees. The plastics are particularly sensitive.

I have a super heat gun that does wonders defrosting. Until a few years ago I
had an upright freezer that meant self defrost. Do it yourself. I bought a heat
gun at Home Depot for things in the shop, and found it would melt ice in a big
hurry.

Also Donnie, don't forget that the evaporator coil could be iced up. This
happened to one we had a couple of refrigerators ago. There was an ice
build up next to the coil in an area that didn't get any air circulation
from the fan. Over time it kept building up and building up and eventually
there was so much ice in there that the defrost heater couldn't get the coil
hot enough to melt the ice that was on the coil its self. I found this out
after taking it apart. The only cure was to shut it down for about a day to
let all the ice melt. About a year later we had to do that again and Sue
decided it was time to get a new fridge.

  Regards.
