William,
If you have access to a braille embosser, I believe you can do it for free.
try going to
http://www.ski.org/tmap
create an account just so it saves your preferences and see how it
goes. Not all features work, and it can be fairly picky about how you
specify the addresses etc. but it's a thoroughly accessible web based
system and the resulting files, once you specify your embosser type, can be
emailed to you or downloaded and directly embossed.

If you have any troubles, bug Josh,

This goes for anybody who is really interested in tactile maps
nad has access to an embosser.

It's a blast to find out what you didn't know about even your home surroundings.

See, I'm not negative about everything! just mibility aids.

As for the cane/dog issue, yes it is absolutely life style.

If I absolutely had to use some kind of ultrasonic aid, it'd be one like
the moat sensor that is hand held and vibrates, not makes noise. There is one
such out there whose name I forget. Used with discrimination and care they
can be of some use, E.G. in following a line of people without
contact.
