Dan, Automotive exhaust systems their mufflers and resonators have employed sound wave canceling technology for years. I remember thinking 20 years ago wouldn't this technology be a great way to protect hearing? However, at the time walking around with a couple of turbo mufflers stuck in your ears would have given the neighbors a reason to point and laugh. I am really glad to see that the technology has been miniaturized and come down in price where normal folks can afford it. I have a set of ear muffs that use electronic sound canceling sold by Smith&wesson. They were well over $100.00 when new and I have to buy those 3 volt camera batteries to run them. They are hot, heavy, bulky and if you forget to turn them off you can burn up $12.00 of batteries in no time.

It does sound a bit strange, something to do with the shape of the headband, the fact that there is a 90 degree turn where the headband connects to the ear plug itself. The website wasn't very specific. Supposedly, it will help reduce low and high frequency noise more than midrange. It attenuates all sound somewhat though. >From a mechanical standpoint, I guess that the mass of the head band, and it's resistance to flex, might increase the attenuation over just the ear plugs. I ordered a set, plus some replacement plugs, and shipped it cost 29 bucks. I'm willing to pay 29 bucks to test them out. My hearing is pretty important to me. -- Blue skies.
