I realize this might be a bit off topic, but before folks go running off and filing claims with their insurance company, you might want to consider this. When you file a claim, it can have an affect on your future premiums or even insurability. The insurance industry doesn't exactly tell you this, but when I purchased my home back in 2003, the company I was insuring it with gave me a very difficult time over a claim that was filed by the previous owners with a different insurance company. There are certainly reasons for filing claims, but consider what your deductible is and the expense of what it will cost if you paid out of your pocket. I for example to keep the cost of my insurance premiums down, I chose a higher deductible of $1,000. I have the money set aside should it ever be necessary and it serves two purposes, I have some emergency cash and the deductible should something happen that I cannot afford to repair/replace on my own. I know not everyone can financially do this, but it is a goal. The entire point is you just don't want to file claims without considering the affect of filing it. Also, it is possible if you really want to make the person pay, you could not only file a police report, you could file a claim with the company that issued the auto policy.
