I like your Idea Tom. We don't usually work with written contracts for such things. I had a chap come with a loader on tracks to excavate and install weeping tile and apply and pack crusher reject and he took a cheque home the afternoon he finished. He has done scape filling work for me in the past, we agree on the work and I pay him. In this case we didn't know how long or how much fill he would need so it was priced by the hour the machine was working and the load.
I don't ever agree to work unless I have the money and am willing to pay. On my way out the door to the bus station to go down to my son's wedding two weeks ago I discovered water running across the basement floor. I was expecting my water tank to be ready to fail and I thought it was probably that. It turned out to be a pin hole, another pin hole in the copper actually just before the main inlet valve to the house which explained why it continued hissing when I turned the main water off. I called a plumber from the station having left the front door open on the way out and he assured me they would take care of it. When we got back they had installed a new shut-off, a new water tank and locked up. Actually it was a little worse than that, the town had to turn off the mains and when they dug it up in the lane their stem had been bent so they had some trouble doing so. Anyway, my point is that the plumber came immediately. I don't know what I will pay yet but I am confident it will be plenty but fare. Well that is, fare as plumbers go. they charged a hundred and twenty six bucks to clean the furnace in June. He isn't concerned about getting paid and what ever the charge he did what I expected he would do so even if high I will pay and he is confident about that. Small towns tend to be good like that. There are shysters of course and I guess this time I got stuck with one. ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Fowle To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, October 01, 2009 1:39 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Paving project update. Dale, I'd get an estimate from a ligit contractor to have the beech sand removed and the polimerized put in. Then I'd discount the bill by that much. I guess if that discount was more than 25^ of the bill I might moderate a bit. Your only error was not having it writt down. Here we have a state contractor's license board to which one can complain and cause stres at least. Don't know if you have such up there in civilized canada.
