Hi Joseph and Lysander,

In refference to the idea that the purpose of the recorder is only for
notes, I would bet that Jonathan would tell you that the recorder is for
what ever you want it for. I've heard him say that it'd even be great if you
could edit audio files with the BN. So the "scope" is only as small or large
as your willing to allow it to be.

In terms of licensing, there are freeware encoders and licensed encoders.
This isn't my area of expertise, but my Iriver was very inexpensive and if
they can put an encoder in there, it's possible for low or no cost in the
BN.

I have heard, again, that when DAISY comes to the BN that encoding on the
fly will be closer.

This, I think, is in large part about space. It'd be much better to take up
only 1 meg a minute instead of 5 megs a minute for high quality recordings.
Imagine the space saved when a student records class lectures with a BN if
the BN could record to mp3.
Additionally, who wants to shuffle a bunch of .wav files to a pc, convert
and reshuffle.

This is all academic because it isn't possible yet, but I'd like to hope
that we're headed in that direction.

Rusty

This is Joseph. There is a program out there called CDEx. It can convert
between mp3 and .wav files. So, for example, if you wisi to convert a note
that has been recorded on the BN to an mp3 file, you can simply transfer the
file to a computer and convert it that way. Recording software that runs on
the computer these days allows you to convert between multiple file formats.

The main issue is one of licensing. Since the BN is a commercial product,
they'd have to license rights to use the encoder. Why do that, when you can
record in WAV and compress it to MP3 on a computer for free? The BN is a
notetaker, not a recording studio. The recording feature is meant for taking
notes. I wish people would keep things in scope.
