Since SMA's, as I understand it, parse out as one SMA use for one increment of 
upgrade, there should be no requirement to use multiple SMA's to reach the 
current status quo.

I'm pretty sure many BrailleNote owners don't have revolving SMA accounts with 
unlimited renewals and just hope to stay current, or at least achieve what 
passes for parity in the blindness gadgetry market.

If some of this went on in the open market, the product would go the way of the 
dodo bird.

Well, if adapting the Keysoft Software to a newer OS is what is
required, then HW owes it to its customers to do it, especially if this
will help address some of the requests and suggestions that have been
put forward.  Yes, this may require more than one SMA count, but so be
it.  HW needs to keep up with its competition.
