Subject: [Braillenote] Anybody Know What to Do if an Apex Appears
to haveForgotten all its Authorization Keys?
Hi all,
I have a request in with Tech Support on this, but I thought I'd
see if
others have dealt with this issue before. My Apex has apparently
lost all
of its authorizations. It won't play RFB&D books. It also won't
access
the dictionary and thesaurus. The menu items and hotkeys for the
dictionary and thesaurus are simply inoperative or are gone from
the
menus. I believe there was also an entry for GPS that would
permit making
trial use of the GPS option, but that seems to have gone to the
great
beyond as well.
I have a suspicion of when all this may have happened. A couple
of days
ago I was browsing on the Internet when my Apex froze. I
couldn't seem to
get unfrozen by normal means, so I hit the Reset button. I was
somewhat
surprised when I started getting messages about installing and
unpacking,
but I figured some fairly serious corruption must have happened
to some of
the application-related files and the unit was refreshing itself
with
clean copies of those files. It didn't occur to me that the unit
could
wipe out its own authorizations in the course of reinitializing.
I have tried the short and long presses of the Reset button so
far. I
have not tried holding down dots 4-5-6 while hitting Reset. I
have a
backup I made today as well as another from a little over a week
ago that
I could perhaps use to restore things--assuming the
authorizations live
somewhere in those backups or at least in the older one.
All that said, what would experienced Apex users do in this
situation? I'm
inclined to wait to hear from Tech Support, but if something as
simple as
restoring an old copy of keysoft.ksd might do the trick, then I
might be
tempted.
Thanks,
Jerry
