I was just doing something like this yesterday, and I agree with Terri's
observation about layout vs. edit modes. In layout mode I didn't see any of
the underlining indicators; I had to use edit mode to see them.
Incidentally, I had written the original document in MSWord and then saved
it as an rtf and sent it to the BN. When I opened the document in the BN,
however, parts of it were missing and other parts totally distorted. But
when I opened that same file on the pc after sending it back everything was
there. I think the BN was confused by some overlapping underline-off
indicators; I'd had some trouble in Word making sure only the right things
got underlined and had to select overlapping bits of text and turn
underlining on and off, and it seems word leaves in the indicators from all
those changes even when they end up not affecting the appearance of the
document. For example, I wanted the first half of a sentence underlined, but
accidentally underlined the whole thing. So I would select part of it and
turn underline off. Then maybe I had to add something to it, then select the
whole thing and turn it on or off, and all those changes were saved even
when they negated each other. All this seemed impossible for the BN to
interpret correctly though I tried the file under several different names.
However, when I would send that same file the BN couldn't read back to the
PC there was no actual corruption of the file or data. I was very frustrated
because I needed to use the BN on the document, so I decided to try
something which I didn't think would work. I converted my rtf to a doc file.
In my prior experience the BN likes Doc files even less than it likes rtf
files, but somehow in this case it worked. The BN was able to open and read
the doc file with no problems displaying the text or formatting.
