You can make the dots all up or down somewhat.
Do you know about the "exercise the braille display" option in the support 
information mode?
There is a point when the bn is going through it's exercise where all 8 dots 
pop up and then they all pop down.
If you can pause the exercise at one of those points, you can probably do what 
you need to do to clean it.
The instructions I got are to wipe the braille display with a damp (not wet, 
damp, very important) cloth.
