Yes, there is a market for these devices.  I simply believe that people
are getting hugely ripped off when they purchase such devices.  I have
seen many complain on this very list about the high price of technology,
well, the reading machine in my opinion is the most inflated of all
technological adaptations.  
Yet, I understand that many individuals can convince themselves that
they're not really using a computer if it is all handy in one box.
Just my thoughts.

There is certainly a niche market for things like this.  My X wife is
totally computer phobic, but she likes to read.  She bought the Portset
reader, and loves it.  The only tragedy could occur if someone buys this
kind of device, and later decides that they want a full fledged
computer.
FS, I believe, still sells the VERA.  This is a sold as a stand alone
reader, but, is actually a stripped down computer, which could be made
into
a full fledged computer if the user's wants or needs change.
