(I'm honestly curious here... can you find an instance in the archives?)
Archives? What archives? You mean that collection of some 100,000 Brin-L posts that just went into the trashcan and from there went to wherever it is that deleted files go?
I seriously hope you're kidding. :-( I have a sinking feeling that you aren't :-(
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst...

I mean, what's the use of (spending countless hours on) building and maintaining an archive, if the mere mention of making that archive available on CD-ROM results in threats of legal action? If a mere mention already has such results, imagine what might happen if and when that CD-ROM actually becomes available. :-(

Why spend several hundred megabytes of disk space on something that, for all intents and purposes, has been rendered useless thanks to the threats from Nick and Andy (even though I doubt they would win their lawsuits)? :-(

I've been doing my best not to get involved in the vicious back and forth between you and Andy, and have also been careful not to involve myself in any discussions of copyright as well. I know very little about copyright law and don't care much about it either. I'm not sure that their indignation is justified: the frickin' archives aren't exactly gonna be burning up bandwidth all over the world. They're not going to be bestsellers! They would simply be for the personal use of listmembers who want them.
Excellent observation, Jon! Good to see that there is at least *one* person beside me who realises what the Archive Project is all about... :-)

But before you posted that, I had thought of and was going to post a solution that might not be feasible -- Nick's server currently categorizes and archives list messages and makes them available in a text document format . Would it not be possible to feed the old archives into the program and let it sort them out? This would eliminate the need for you to sort them yourself and would also solve the copyright issue -- since the posts would be available in their entirety in one location.
That might theoretically work, but if you have been paying attention you will remember why I do not consider that an option.
