How's this:

Use your thumb as a pointer.

You have 3 segments each on 4 fingers.  Count the segments in some
particular order using your thumb as the pointer for each count.

With 2 hands, you can get up to 144.

Next exercise:

Describe how to count up to 1023 on 10 fingers.  :)
