When I was running a student team we received minimal funding, possibly
enough to fund affiliation but nothing more... The problem is the rules
which are being laid down now for the future of British Ultimate are meant
to deal with generalities and not specific situations.... In the UK there
has always been issues which have been dealt with at the "discretion" of the
vounteers who do a great job of making the infrastructure of British
Ultimate work at the moment (think about seedings for Nationals now...). The
regulations laid down for the Association, as I understand it, are based
around generalities which should hopefully work and improve the overall
workings of British Ultimate.

Every team is as individual as the players within that team (some player
like footie, some are less keen:-) and so if BUF commitee was to try and lay
down a set of rules which accounted for the differing ways every team works
we'll be discussing these things until we're all old and grey. That's not to
say that we shouldn't have discussions.... now before things are set in
motion is the time to try and get problems sorted out when we come across
them.

Think back to when you started ultimate, the drinking, the parties, the lack
of side arm and the immense fun..... After 1 year, 1 tournament you were
hooked right? I know I was and I made a lot of sacrifices when I was a
student to make tournies and cash was just one of these.... 18 for one year
(OK it's 20 pints in some bars 6 in others but either way it still works out
at less than half a pint a week) isn't bad and it's not just for indoor
regionals... it's for Student Outdoor Nationals, the Tour, infact all
[presently] BUF tournaments. I've had to pay fees at a similar rate in the
past to join other National Sports organisations and I've never really
thought about the cost, it's just something which enables me to enjoy more
of what I love to do! (BTW I think everyone who plays in a club, even in
there first year should go to indoor regionals which would be free under
these terms of necessary BUA membership fees!). Plus tournament fees should
come down with the abolition of tournament tax so the more events you attend
the better value it all works out (well unless you go to Ross that is;-0).

The new association will hopefully help make BUSA recognition a reality and
maybe make those A.U.'s out there a little more forthcoming with the cash
(yes I know how tight they can be!). All the ideas, insurance etc. is a
great idea but it does come at a price. What price are students really
prepared to pay? Perhaps there's an argument for team affiliation to remain
for the student system but that's another discussion.

Just a few thoughts over a wasted lunch!

Cheers,

Phil
Clapham

The University of Cambridge as a rule pays nothing towards Strange Blue's
costs. We even have to hire indoor facilities in a public sports centre as
the University does not have an adequate gym itself. If we want any sort of
grant we have to fight for the 60 BUF association fee. Students land up
paying hundreds of pounds each to play in tournaments and indoor practices
throughout the year. So those student teams who are funded by your Student
Union, count yourself lucky.
