my pov is that having a single award for spirit isn't the best way of
maintaining/improving spirit (was this Pete's point too?), and so we should
consider whether we can better use the information (via feedback).

"Good" spirit is different at different levels of the game, and personally I
think high spirit scores  (9+/10) should not be given unless the game was
close OR during a key period of the game exemplary spirit was shown, because
that's when spirit matters the most.

Coming back to spirit and youngsters/beginners, it is up to the
coach/teacher/experienced player to step in and highlight good/bad spirit
and its purpose, just as it is their responsibility to explain the rules.
