It looks to me like you might be encountering a problem which I'm indeed aware of. If so, it's USB-specific so I expect your serial test to be successful. The last time I tested a Braille Sense with USB on Linux, a temrporary problem within the device was caused when Linux closed the device. In other words, the device worked the first time, but not the second time. Disconnecting/reconnecting the USB cable cleared the problem, but, of course, only for one more use, after which the problem had to be cleared again.
